If the only fault code is F04 or F03 then it is mechanical failure - usually mode switch or capstan motor. This model uses a Z-mech which was common in these machines from 1997 to 2000 and it was pretty reliable. If your machine is not making weird/loud scraping noises before showing F03 or F04 and/or rejecting tapes when PLAY is pressed then it is likely to be the mode switch, these parts ARE available and cheap, replacing these WILL fix most mechanical problems.
