why my televison screen don't open fully.

hi my name is joanna and someone made me a gift of your 32" lcd/hd television but the problem is I have cable with hd but when I am on the hd channels I have too put the picture on strech to view the whole screen. and when I am on the regular channels I have too put it on zoom too veiw the entire screen and when I do I can't see the bottom of the screen like for e.g if I am on the game show network and they are showing the four choice answers I would only be able too see A.&B. and not the rest now I have a manual but some of the features I don't know how to acess the feature to this particular problem and I also called in the cable company and they tried everything and told me that the problem has too be rectified from within the television. thanking you in advance joanna!
