Sharp VCR VC-A410U

VCR not recording properly

We set the VCR to record a program (for example: 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. channel 5), turn off the VCR. The timer light comes on. The VCR starts recording at the proper time and stops at the proper time, but when we rewind and play tape back there is nothing there, only black and white static lines. What can we do. If a movie VHS is inserted we can play that fine.
