doesn't work

I changed the battery, cleaned the terminals,inserted new batteries and nothing happens. I cannot turn the receiver on/off or adjust the volume. There are so many things that are used by the remote but NOTHING is working.This remote is about ten inches long and at both ends the remote is "bent" at right angles so the remote looks like a "mini bench". the bottom end is circular in the back. the top is triangular in the back. the backside has nubby things all over it. There are about 5 categories of buttons on the front of the remote. The words "RCA Universal" are printed at the bottom.
