Call me stupid for asking this but HOW DO YOU TURN THIS THING ON AND OFF WITHOUT TAKING OUT THE BATTERIES AND PUTTING THEM BACK IN WHEN I TURN IT BACK ON?

Try turning the hold switch on for a few seconds. Its should turn off automatically if you aren't recording something.

Brand new, unpacked from box and connected to TV via scart lead.
Unit just displays "HI--" in window and this does not change to anything else?
I cannot get it to open the CD drawer, or get into any menus--it will not do anything at all?
TV just says "no signal"
I suspect that this is a faulty recorder
CAN YOU ADVISE PLEASE?

Is there any way to transfer a show from the DVR to my computer using the USB port at the front of the unit? I do not see any options in the menu's that would allow you to transfer files.
