How to hook up a laptop to the tv....

I have hooked up a vga cable from a laptop to the vga connection on the back of the TV. However, I am not getting a signal on the TV. I get the message: "Main not support". Can some one help me get this to work? I would like to view my laptop desktop on the TV.
