Why won't my 50" Emerson TV connect to my old Sate...

Why won't my 50" Emerson TV connect to my old Satellite Dish cable that I used on an old 26" 1990 TV? It's just a spare TV and I don't have to have HD so I thought I could just use the same cable. Do I have to change to a different setting. I tried the TV setting and get no pic other than the Emerson sign on screen.
