Sound on A GE Gemstar TV model 46gw948...

The sound on our tv just stopped, I can not get the variable sound to switch from off to on. There 's a popping noise in the speakers when You attempt to adjust it upwards

0 the volume just quit, we can not get the variable output to switch from off to on
