i was given this product as a gift. the remote do...

i was given this product as a gift. the remote does not work and I cannot seem to program the machine by hand. I would like to know how to accomplish this because the machine is in perfect shape and I would like to start using the VCR portion. Also, I have a remote, but it will only turn it on, but not program the vcr/dvd combo
