how do I hook-up to record DVD's when VCR doesn"t ...

how do I hook-up to record DVD's when VCR doesn"t work to an old TV? Model MWR20V6. Want to copy (playing from another VCR) to TV, to DVD recorder? Had problem w/message "disc error" cannot record" using Sony DVD+RW 120min/4.7GB also using Sony DVD+R. Which is best for recording, so that you can copy over it, if not recorded right?
