I have a Phillips DVD/VCR combo and my remote only...

I have a Phillips DVD/VCR combo and my remote only works in the on/off mode. I cannot fast forward, rewind or pause. Nor can I arrow over to access the closed captioning. I have changed the batteries and this did not help???
