i have tried to connect macbook air to an old QD23...

i have tried to connect macbook air to an old QD23wl04 tv via vga connection to a thunderbolt on the macbook. I get no picture. I tried ext1 and ext 2 ....any other channels that may work? i thought it'd be channel independent
