I am forced to use a comcast converter for my TV. ...

I am forced to use a comcast converter for my TV. I could rent a comcast DVR for about $17.00/mo. I used to record future programs on my Magnavox combo but it's impossible with the converter. I will not pay the rental fee if I don't have too. Is there an RCA box I can purchase to over ride the comcast converter cheaper.??
