how to get picture on tv when switched on...

when I turn on tv, it goes through a searching mode for about 1 minute and then tell me it can't findantenna connection. How do I turn on tv and have a program on straight away? Also i have to manually press av on the tv to get cable tv to work. Thanks, Joan
