6 I own a similar system that began to have a "protect" error message when I crank up the volume. Before you proceed, the solution requires you to open up your system by removing the top cover via removal of five screws and opening it up. So IF you are not experienced in opening up electronic equipment I suggest you find somebody who does. The error is caused by the cooling fan being stuck or not able to spin. The system has a sensor wherein, when it detects that the "amplifier" IC heats up, it spins up the fan to cool it down. IF the system detects that the fan is not spinning during the cooling phase, it will give out the "protect" message. Note that it will only spin when you crank up the volume. Less or 0 volume will shut down the fan due to it's "energy star" feature. To solve the problem, I cleaned out the dust in the system via a 1 inch wide paint brush (haven't tried the compressed bottled air used to clean computers BUT it might do) and nudged the fan. Played the system w/o a cover and observed the fan operation and so far it has solved the issue. I plan to lubricate the fan shaft with very small amount(less than a drop) of machine oil using a syringe. If it doe not work, I plan to see if I could purchase a replacement motor for the fan... hope this helps....
