Question About Toshiba DVD Recorder None

I have this hooked up along with a cable box so I have an S-Video cable running from the recorder to the cable box an it's set to R1. I can only record a program if the TV is on and tuned to the station. How do I record a show when I'm not at home or if the TV is off?
