when i playback a video tape i cannot change the a...

when i playback a video tape i cannot change the audio settings from tereo to mono or left to right channel with the remote.also the "stereo" symbol does not appear on the bottom right hand of the screen when using display option ( ie shows counter , sp etc ) Can you tell me why it is doing this please ?
