Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS
With Dolby Pro Logic, the surround sound is obtained from the stereo signal.
This system carries the three front audio channels and a rear channel. However,
this method has the drawback that, for technical reasons, the rear channel
consists of a mono channel and must be limited in its frequency range and
dynamic range, which means the trebles of the rear channel are reduced.
Dolby Pro Logic II operates in much the same way as Dolby Pro Logic. However,
here the rear channel consists of two separate stereo channels, whose frequency
range is not restricted.
Dolb
y Digital, on the other hand, is a digital sound system designed for
completely independent multi-channel audio playback. Five full audio channels
and a low frequency effects (LFE) channel are carried. In general, Dolby Digital
signals can also consist of fewer than 5 channels (for example 2.0 or 3.0).
DTS Di
gital Surround is a digital sound system for differentiated 5.1 multi-chan-
nel audio reproduction which creates three-dimensional surround sound effects.
