SYSTEM INSTALLATION
Selecting Antennas
Use quarter-wave or half-wave antennas for mounting
on the back or front of the WA405. Half-wave antennas offer
improved performance over quarter-wave antennas and
can be used for remote mounting without a backplane. Half-
wave antennas are available from Shure in two different
styles: flexible cable or “roll-up” (Model WA490) and tele-
scoping (Model WA390).
Antennas come in different lengths for different frequen-
cy bands: A (169–185 MHz), B (185–200 MHz), and C
(200–230 MHz). For best performance, choose the antenna
length that corresponds to your system’s operating frequen-
cy. When more than one frequency band is covered, select
antennas as follows:
S If the frequencies span two adjacent bands, select an-
tennas for the lowest frequency band.
S If the frequencies span all three bands, use one from the
lowest band, and one from the highest band (one “A” an-
tenna and one “C” antenna).
Antenna Extension Cables
Extension cables allow greater freedom for antenna
placement. When operating conditions are less than ideal,
they allow you to place antennas farther apart for better di-
versity reception, or to place them closer to the transmitters.
NOTE: Use only half-wave antennas (or other ground plane
independent antenna) for remote antenna placement. Nev-
er use quarter-wave antennas with extension cables.
The following cables types are recommended:
Maximum
Distance
Cable Type
6.1 m (20 ft) Shure WA421 Extension Cable Kit
12.2 m (40 ft) RG-58U
30.5 m (100 ft) Low-loss RG-8U or RG-11U
NOTE: For lengths greater than 30.5 m (100 ft), special
low-loss cable types are necessary. Consult the Shure Ap-
plications Group for more information.
Installing Front-Mounted Antennas
1. Insert the bulkhead adapters through the holes in each
bracket, and secure them from each side using the sup-
plied hardware. See Figure 3.

2. Connect the supplied antenna cables to the receiver an-
tenna inputs and adapters. See Figure 4.

3. Install the antennas onto the bulkhead adapters pro-
truding through the front panel. See Figure 5.

Mounting the WA405 in an Equipment Rack
1. Insert the unit into a 19-inch equipment rack.
2. Using the screws supplied, secure the unit to the rack
(Figure 6).

rack, insert the supplied plastic plugs into the holes on
the front of the brackets.
