Troubleshooting
The aspect ratio of the screen cannot be changed
even though you set “TV TYPE” in “SCREEN
SETUP” in the setup display when you play a
wide picture.
/ The aspect ratio is fixed on your DVD.
/ If you connect the player with the S video cord,
connect directly to the TV. Otherwise, you may not
change the aspect ratio.
/ Depending on the TV, you may not change the
aspect ratio.
The numbers or letters of 5 characters are
displayed on the front panel display.
/ Self diagnosis function was activated. See the table
in page 68 and treat the player appropriately.
The picture is black and white.
/ In the setup display, set “EURO AV OUT” in
”CUSTOM SETUP” to the appropriate item
conforms to your TV. (page 54)
/ Depending on the TV, the picture on the screen
becomes black and white when you play a disc
recorded in NTSC color system.
Sound
There is no sound.
/ Check that the player is connected securely.
/ The audio connecting cord is damaged. Replace it
with a new one.
/ Make sure you connect the player to the audio
input connectors on the receiver (amplifier). (page
12)
/ Make sure you turn on the TV and the receiver
(amplifier).
/ Make sure you select the appropriate position on
the receiver (amplifier) so that you can listen to the
sound from the player.
/ The player is in pause mode or in Slow-motion
Play mode. Press · to return to normal play
mode.
/ Fast forward (1) or 2)) or fast reverse (10
or 20) is performed. Press · to return to
normal play mode.
/ Check the speaker connections and settings. (page
14, 61) Refer to the operating manual of your
receiver (amplifier).
/ When you play the Dolby Digital/MPEG AUDIO
sound tracks and attempt to output from the
DIGITAL OUT connectors, set “DIGITAL OUT” to
“ON” in the setup display. Otherwise no sound
will come out from the DIGITAL OUT connectors.

/ When you play the DTS sound tracks, no sound
will come out from the AUDIO OUT, 5.1CH
OUTPUT and PHONES connectors. (page 59)
Sound noise is heard.
/ Clean the disc.
/ When you play the DTS sound tracks on a CD,
sound noise will come out from the AUDIO OUT,
5.1CH OUTPUT and PHONES connectors. (page

Sound distortion occurs.
/ In the setup display, set “AUDIO ATT” in “AUDIO
SETUP” to “ON.”
The sound loses stereo effect when you play a
VIDEO CD or a CD.
/ Set “AUDIO” to “STEREO” in the Control Menu
display. (page 33)
/ Make sure you connect the player appropriately.

The surround effect is difficult to hear when you
are playing a Dolby Digital sound track.
/ Check the speaker connections and settings. (page
14, 61) Refer to the operating manual of your
receiver (amplifier).
/ Depending on the DVD, the output signal may not
be the entire 5.1 channel but monaural or stereo
even if the sound track is recorded in Dolby Digital
format.
The sound comes from the center speaker only.
/ Depending on the disc, the sound may come from
the center speaker only.
/ Set “VIRTUAL 3D SURROUND“ to “OFF,” “VES
A” or “VES B” in the Control Menu display. (page
36)
The sound comes from the front speaker only.
/ You set “VIRTUAL 3D SURROUND“ to “VES A”
or “VES B” in the Control Menu display when you
have connected the rear speakers (page 36).
Select the other item.
Operation
The remote does not function.
/ Remove any obstacles between the remote and the
player.
/ Use the remote near the player.
/ Point the remote at the remote sensor g on the
player.
/ Replace all the batteries in the remote with new
ones if they are weak.
