Most DVD VIDEO or Video CD/SVCD discs provide a
menu, through which users can select desired
material, conditions, etc.
MP3
MP3 is an audio data compression format, which
stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. Using MP3, you can
achieve a data reduction of about 1:10.
MPEG
A family of Standards for compressing audio-visual
information. "MPEG" standards include MPEG-1,
MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Video CD and MP3 are based on
MPEG-1, while DVD is based on MPEG-2. MPEG
stands for Moving Picture coding Experts Group.
MPEG Multichannel
This feature expands the 5.1 channel audio format
recorded on the disc to a 7.1 channel format. The
further expansion of the 5.1 channel audio makes it
easy for you to reproduce the movie theater
experience in your own home.
Multisession
A method of adding data to a CD-R/CD-RW in more
than one recording session using the Track-At-Once
method.
NTSC (National television system committee)
A black and white and color television system format
used in the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico and Japan.
Packet Writing
A method of writing data on a CD-R/CD-RW in small
increments. Packets can be of fixed or variable length.
PAL (Phase Alternation by Line)
A color television system format used extensively in
Western Europe.
Pan and scan
A type of video display for normal (4:3) TV screens.
The image is zoomed to fill the screen vertically, and
the field of view may be panned while the left and/or
right sides of the picture are cut off.
Parental lock
A DVD function that prevents undesired viewing by
children depending on disc content. Ordinarily, a
password is required to play back a locked disc.
Otherwise, undesirable scenes are automatically
skipped or replaced with other pictures.
PBC
PBC stands for "Playback control" and is a method of
controlling disc play for Video CDs (VCD). You are able
to interact with the disc through menus.
Region code
Code identifying a geographic region of compatibility
for a DVD.
Sampling frequency
The rate at which measurements of an audio signal
are taken during A/D conversion. The sampling
frequency is expressed in samples per second.
Surround
An audio system with more than two (left and right)
channels, usually including rear channels, etc.
S-video
A video signal which improves picture quality over
standard composite connections. Used on Super VHS,
DVD, high end TV monitors, etc.
Title
The largest division on DVD VIDEO.
Tr a c k
The smallest division on Audio CD, Video CD and
SVCD discs.
Transfer rate
The rate of transferring digital data. The transfer rate
is usually expressed in bits per second. The DVD
system uses a variable transfer rate for high efficiency.
