Safety Precautions
Warning: To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose
this equipment to rain or moisture.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Warning:
Any unauthorized changes or modifications to this equip-
ment void the user’s authority to operate it.
This VCR, equipped with a High Quality (HQ) System, is compati-
ble with existing Video Home System (VHS) equipment. Philips
Consumer Electronics recommends that you use only video cas-
sette tapes that are labelled with the mark. The use of other
tapes may result in poor picture quality and excessive deposits on
the video heads, which may not be covered by the warranty if
damage occurs.
This VCR also is equipped with S-VHS Quasi Playback (SQPB),
allowing you to play S-VHS recordings with regular VHS resolu-
tion. This product has a 19 micron head that provides a better
picture when you view tapes recorded in slow speed (SLP).
Note to the Cable TV System Installer: This reminder is provided
to call the Cable TV system installer’s attention to Article 820-40
of the National Electrical Code, which provides guidelines for
proper grounding – in particular, specifying that the cable ground
shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as
close to the point of cable entry as possible.
Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this
device may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept
any interference, including interference that may cause undesired
operation of the device.
Welcome to your VCR owner’s manual.
This manual describes the VRA451 and the VRA651. The VRA451 is a monaural (single sound source) sys-
tem, while the VRA651 is a stereo system. Otherwise, the two models are exactly the same. In this manual,
the VRA651 is illustrated. (The VRA451 has single AUDIO IN/OUT Jacks. Otherwise, the VRA451 looks
exactly like the VRA651.)
This manual has seven sections: Setting Up Your VCR; Description of Controls; Basic Operations;
Recording; Playing; Additional Features; and Information You May Need. The instructions explain all of the
VCR’s features, which are listed below.
