Basic Connection
A Check contents
Make sure the package contains all of the
accessories listed in ‘SPECIFICATIONS’ (A page
97).
B Situate VCR
Place the VCR on a stable, horizontal surface.
C Connect VCR to TV
The following connections are required.
A Disconnect the TV antenna from the TV.
B Connect the TV antenna cable to the VCR’s
[ANTENNA IN] terminal.
C Connect the supplied RF cable between the
VCR’s [ANTENNA OUT] terminal and the
TV’s antenna input terminal.
D Connect an coaxial cable from the digital
broadcast source to the VCR’s [ASTC IN] ter-
minal.
E Connect a HDMI cable between the VCR’s
[HDMI OUT] connector and the TV’s HDMI
input connector.
If your TV has only DVI input, use a HDMI to
DVI conversion cable to connect to the VCR’s
[HDMI OUT] connector. Also, connect an
audio cable between the VCR’s [AUDIO
OUTPUT] connectors and the TV’s audio
input connectors. If your TV is connected to
an AV Amplifier, you can make use of the
VCR’s [OPTICAL] connector to connect to the
amplifier (A page 66).
* If your TV does not have a HDMI or DVI
connector, you can make a ‘Component Video
Connection’ or ‘VIDEO/S-VIDEO Connection’
as stated below:
Component Video Connection
a– Connect a component video cable between
the VCR’s [COMPONENT VIDEO OUT]
connectors and the TV’s component video
input connectors.
b– Connect an audio cable between the VCR’s
[AUDIO OUTPUT] connectors and the TV’s
audio input connectors.
VIDEO/S-VIDEO Connection
a– Connect an S-Video cable between the VCR’s
[S-VIDEO OUTPUT] connector and the TV’s
S-Video input connector.
If your TV does not have a S-Video input
connector, use a video cable to connect
between the VCR’s [VIDEO OUTPUT]
connector and the TV’s video input
connector.
b– Connect an audio cable between the VCR’s
[AUDIO OUTPUT] connectors and the TV’s
audio input connectors.
D Connect VCR to power source
Connect the AC power plug to the AC outlet.
•The clock and tuner channels will automatically
be set when the antenna is connected and when
the AC power cord is first connected to an AC
power outlet (A page 14).
(If [AUTO] or channel numbers are displayed
on the front display panel before the VCR is
turned on, the clock and tuner channels are
being set automatically. Wait until the clock
time is displayed on the front display panel
before turning on the VCR.)
NOTE:
When AC cord is connected to AC outlet, [LOADING]
appears on the front display panel. It takes some time
until the unit turns on.
E Final preparation for use
Turn on the VCR.
•You can now perform basic playback
(A page 28) or basic recording (A page 35).
NOTES:
• If you cannot see the pictures on the TV screen when you play
back a tape, set “TV OUTPUT 2” to the appropriate mode
(
A page 67). “TV OUTPUT 2” is invalid when HDMI is
activated.
• If your TV’s component video connectors support only the
progressive video input and not high definition video input,
you can set “TV OUTPUT 2” to “ALLto480p” (
A page 67) or
“480i to 480p” to “ON” (
A page 67) to enjoy high quality
picture.
The progressive mode indicator [q] on the front display panel
will light up when the video output is in progressive mode.
• To operate the VCR with your TV using the HDMI, DVI,
Component Video or S-VIDEO connection, set your TV to the
AV mode using the TV’s Remote.
You can also use the TV/VCR button on the VCR’s Remote to
set your TV to the AV mode (
A page 84).
ATTENTION:
When this VCR is connected to some HDMI devices, signals
that are normally output from the VCR in the 480i image
format may be outputted as 480p image format signals. In
such cases, signal cannot be output from the [S VIDEO
OUTPUT] connector or the [VIDEO OUTPUT] connectors.
If the [S VIDEO OUTPUT] connector or the [VIDEO
OUTPUT] connectors are used, press the [HDMI] button on
the front panel to turn off the [HDMI] LED and set “TV
OUTPUT 2” to “ALLto480i” (
A page 67).
In event when even the main menu screen cannot be
displayed on the TV when [MENU] is pressed, power off this
VCR, press and hold [PAUSE (
W)] for more than 5 seconds,
then power on the VCR again.
