Changing the unit’s settings
Underlined items are the factory default settings.
[DVD-V] Choose the language for audio, subtitles and disc menus.
If a language which is not recorded is selected, or if languages are
already fixed on the disc, the language set as the default on the disc
will be played instead.
Original
The original language of each disc will be selected.
Other ¢¢¢¢
This is the language code setting.
Input a code number with the numbered buttons. (l 59, Language
code list)
Automatic
If the language selected for Soundtrack” is not available, subtitles of
that language will automatically appear if available on the disc.
Settings for recording
Press [ENTER] to show the following settings.
Recording time in EP mode
Select the maximum number of hours for recording in EP mode (l 19,
Recording modes and approximate recording times).

Comb Filter
Select the picture sharpness when recording.
The setting is fixed to “On” if you set “TV System” (l 59) to “NTSC”.

Dynamic Range Compression
[DVD-V] (Dolby Digital only)
Change the dynamic range (l 62) for easier listening in low volume.

Bilingual Audio Selection
Select whether to record the main or secondary audio type when recording
or transferring (copying) to DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW (DVD-Video
format) +R, +R DL or +RW. You cannot select the audio when recording
from an external device. Select it on the external device. (Except for DV
equipment connected to this unit’s DV IN terminal.)

Digital Audio Output
Change the settings when you have connected equipment through the
unit’s DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal (l 13).
Press [ENTER] to show the following settings.
Note
Incorrect settings can cause noise, which can be harmful to your ears and
speakers to be output and the audio will not be recorded properly on
media such as mini discs.
PCM Down Conversion
Select how to output audio that has a sampling frequency of 96 kHz or
88.2 kHz.
Signals are converted to 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz despite the above settings
if the signals have a sampling frequency of over 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz, or
the disc has copy protection.

Choose whether to output by “Bitstream” which processes Dolby Digital
signals on other connected equipment or to convert the signals to “PCM”
(2 channels) on the unit before output.

on other connected equipment or to convert the signals to “PCM”

Audio Mode for DV Input
You can select the kind of audio when recording from the unit’s DV IN
terminal.

When recording bilingual broadcasts to a disc, select the type of audio in
advance at “Bilingual Audio Selection” l left.
Display
On-Screen Messages
Choose whether to show status messages automatically or not.

Grey Background
Select whether to show the grey background, normally shown when TV
reception is poor.

FL Display
Changes the brightness of the unit’s display.

When “Power Save” is set to “On” (l 59), this setting is automatically
fixed to “Automatic”.
EP ( 6Hours ) You can record for 6 hours on an unused 4.7 GB disc.
EP ( 8Hours ) You can record for 8 hours on an unused 4.7 GB disc.
On Pictures become clear and vivid. Normally, use this
setting.
Off Select it when recording noisy pictures.
Field Select if jittering occurs when “Automatic” is selected.
Frame Select if you cannot see small text or fine patterns clearly
when “Automatic” is selected.
On Signals are converted to 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz. (Choose
when the connected equipment cannot process signals
with sampling frequency of 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz.)
Off Signals are output as 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz. (Choose when
the connected equipment can process signals with
sampling frequency of 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz.)
Bitstream When you have connected the unit to a piece of
equipment with the Dolby Digital logo.
PCM When you have connected the unit to a piece of
equipment without the Dolby Digital logo.
Bitstream When you have connected the unit to a piece of
equipment with the DTS logo.
PCM When you have connected the unit to a piece of
equipment without the DTS logo.
Bitstream When you have connected the unit with a built-in MPEG
decoder.
PCM When you have connected the unit without a built-in
MPEG decoder.
Stereo 1 Records audio (L1, R1)
Stereo 2 Records added audio such as narration (L2, R2)
subsequent to the original recording.
Mix Records both Stereo 1 and Stereo 2
Automatic The display turns dark during play and reappears
momentarily if a button is pressed. When the unit is turned
off, the unit’s display disappears. While using this mode
the standby power consumption can be reduced.
