System Overview
T
he Dell
®
PowerEdge
®
4200 system is a high-speed, high-availability,
upgradable server system built around the Intel
®
Pentium
®
II family of
microprocessors. For ease of expansion, the PowerEdge 4200 system provides
both PCI expansion slots as well as industry-standard EISA expansion slots.
The PowerEdge 4200’s system board supports a variety of expansion features
including a second microprocessor upgrade and eight DIMM connectors that
permit expanding main memory from a standard 64 MB to 512 MB. A jumper
block on the system board permits easy selection/deselection of system features
such as password protection, onboard video controller, and internal processor
clock speed.
Up to six internal hard-disk drive bays and four external hard-disk drive bays
provide for a variety of CD-ROM, tape backup, diskette drive, and hard-disk
drive installation options.
For increased system availability and ease of servicing, the PowerEdge 4200
system is equipped with a hot-pluggable SCSI hard-disk drive backplane, ther-
mal and power-supply monitoring features, redundant fans, ECC memory,
optional redundant power supplies, and RAID capability.
The PowerEdge 4200 system is designed for freestanding operation but can also
be rackmounted.
S
ystem Features
The Dell PowerEdge 4200 system includes the following standard features:
•
Pentium II microprocessor with math coprocessor, MMX
TM
technology, and
Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD), a technique that allows the
microprocessor to process multiple data elements in parallel
•
Support for symmetric multiprocessing when a second microprocessor is
installed (requires multiprocessing operating system such as Microsoft
®
Windows NT
®
3.51 or higher or Novell
®
NetWare
®
4.11 SMP or higher)
•
512 KB of cache memory located in the microprocessor/single-edge contact
(SEC) cartridge/heat sink assembly that also houses the Pentium II
microprocessor
•
64 MB of 72-bit-wide, buffered, EDO system memory, upgradable to a
maximum of 512 MB by installing combinations of 32- to 128-MB DIMMs
in eight DIMM sockets on the system board; fast-page mode and EDO
DIMMs are supported
